DETERIORATION ISSUES IN OVERHEAD WATER TANK.

( Observed during Structural Audit )

Overhead water tank is a prime & important structural component of a building subjected to cyclic loading.

Every building structure / part, like OHWT is constructed to serve for a particular life span. Not following codal provisions of IS:3370-2009, IS:456-2002 & subsequent non maintenance leads to deterioration of OHWT.

CASE STUDY : RESTORATION OF DETERIORATED OHWT.

(Over Head Water Tank – Strengthening, Retrofitting & Repair)

By Er. R. D. Kalgutkar, Er. Prajakta Bhise.

Waterproofing of the base slab from inside was poor & the concrete was pervious. Flexural cracks in concrete due to cyclic loads added to propagation of cracks. This has led to seepage of water to the reinf.

It is quite acceptable that apartment/flat owners show less interest in demolishing & reconstructing the OHWT when the structure is nearing redevelopment.  The option they choose is to repair it at minimal cost rather than constructing a new one.

Only repairing was not enough for this particular OHWT hence we decided to structurally strengthen it. The process of strengthening is discussed in this article.
